About the role
Most local stories are never sent to anyone: a school's new programme, a market's new way of working, a founder's first export. You will go and find them. You will meet the people involved, take or collect photographs, ask the right questions, and write the story with its sources.
What you will do
- Find and report 8–12 stories a month from the localities you cover, with named sources.
- Build a network of organisations, colleges, associations and founders who will tell you their news.
- Interview people in person and by phone; capture photographs and quotes, and note who gave permission for what.
- Write the Story Short and the full story, and tag them to the right category, type and place.
- Help the people you interview publish under their own name where that suits them.
What we are looking for
- Good knowledge of the city or area you would cover, and the ability to travel across it.
- Clear reporting and writing in English; other languages you work in are a plus.
- Comfortable approaching strangers and handling a refusal.
- A phone good enough to take publishable photographs.
Helpful, not required
- Prior reporting or stringer experience.
- Basic photo and video skills.
- Fluency in the local language of the area.
A small task to include
Pick one locality in the city you would cover. Send three story ideas for it, each with who you would speak to and why a reader outside the neighbourhood would care.
Put it in a document or page and share the link in your application, or paste it into the note.
